Heading into the northern-most point of North Chatham, just before the Cold River AMC Camp, is a 52-acre riverfront farm abutting conservation land; it’s name is North Wind Grange.

North Wind Grange began as a dairy farm in 1825 with a cape home known originally as the Chandler Farm. In 1890, the second and third floors were added giving the house its dramatic gabled dormers. The property operated as a ten-bedroom inn from 1890 through the end of WWII, with guests enjoying fishing, hunting, and hiking in scenic Evans Notch, surrounded by the majestic White Mountain National Forest.

The pristine Cold River runs through the property and wildlife is plentiful with birds, wild turkeys, moose and deer as frequent visitors. There is even a spring fed ice pond. The Lakes Region Snowmobile and Cross-country Trail runs adjacent to the farm and is easily accessible; numerous opportunities for horseback riding, snow shoeing and other outdoor activities abound.

North Wind Grange is located in this beautiful setting with open fields and mountain scenery. The main house was extensively renovated in 2001, preserving historic details and tastefully blending in updated features throughout. In 2004, the “Ell” was totally rebuilt, including a large second floor room with picturesque northern and southern views.

The land has been lovingly cared for and most recently operated as a livestock farm under organic certification. North Wind Grange would lend itself to a private residence for a large family, or as a hunting or equine estate. Of course, it can always be the grand dame of farms in North Chatham!
